Book ahead — this is one of Penang’s most popular family attractions, and peak dates fill up. Entopia is not a traditional butterfly museum. It is a nature learning center built on the site of the world‘s first tropical butterfly farm, which opened in 1986 and was rebuilt and rebranded as Entopia in 2016.

The park has two distinct worlds. Natureland is an outdoor living garden where over 15,000 butterflies from 60 species fly freely among waterfalls, ponds, and caves — the largest butterfly and dragonfly garden in Malaysia. The Cocoon is an indoor discovery center on two floors, housing over 1,400 insect species including stick insects, leaf bugs, scorpions, and beetles, with interactive exhibits on butterfly lifecycles and ecosystems.

Free daily activities are the highlight. Throughout the day, the park runs nature learning sessions at scheduled hours — including a butterfly release (Vita Nova) where you can hold a newly emerged butterfly and watch it take its first flight. There are also sessions on insect exploration, reptile encounters, and cocoon silk crafting. Check the activity board at the entrance for timings when you arrive.

What you’ll experience: Walk through a tropical rainforest simulation with 200+ plant species. Butterflies may land on your shoulder or hand — the park‘s hand-raised butterflies are used to human presence and will approach you. The indoor exhibits are fully weatherproof, so the visit works even in Penang‘s sudden rains.
