Don't have a ticket for the Forbidden City?
No worries at all! Jingshan Park is your perfect alternative to catch the most iconic and breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the Forbidden City’s golden-tiled roofs and grand red walls. Perched atop Wanchun Pavilion—the highest point in central Beijing—you can take in the full scale of the imperial palace stretching out below, with its symmetrical courtyards and ancient architecture laid out like a magnificent scroll. It’s a vantage point that even many visitors inside the Forbidden City can’t experience.
Visit Jingshan Park, an imperial garden with a long history, located to the north of the Forbidden City in Beijing. Situated on the north-south central axis of Beijing, the park covers an area of about 23 hectares.
The park is centered around Jingshan Hill, an artificial hill with a height of 45.7 meters. It was constructed during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty using the soil excavated from the moats of the Imperial Palace and nearby canals.
There are five peaks in the park, and each peak is topped with a pavilion. Among them, the Wanchun Pavilion on the middle peak is the highest point of the park, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Beijing, especially a spectacular view of the Forbidden City. The other four pavilions are the Guanmiao Pavilion and Zhoushang Pavilion on the east peaks, and the Yifang Pavilion and Fulan Pavilion on the west peaks.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, Jingshan Park also has rich historical and cultural connotations. The Shouhuang Palace in the park is an ancestral hall of the Qing Dynasty, with bronze statues of 19 emperors inside. There is also a place marked by a stone tablet near the east gate of the park, which is the location where the last emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Chongzhen, hanged himself in 1644.
The park is also famous for its flowers. There are tens of thousands of peonies and Chinese herbaceous peonies in the park. Every spring, the peony exhibition attracts a large number of tourists. In summer, there is a lotus exhibition, and in autumn, a chrysanthemum exhibition is held.
