Your cultural adventure begins with a convenient pick-up from your hotel in Cusco. Travel through the scenic landscapes of the Sacred Valley until you arrive at the picturesque community of Umasbamba in Chinchero. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the Varayoc — the community leader — to the vibrant sounds of traditional Andean music. Enjoy a warm welcome drink of mate de muña as you meet your hosts and hear stories of their customs and way of life.
Begin the experience with an introduction to ancient agricultural tools and techniques used for planting, cultivating, and harvesting in the Andes. Then, take part in the preparation of Pachamanca, a centuries-old cooking method where meats, tubers, and vegetables are slow-cooked in an earthen oven with hot stones. While your feast cooks underground, witness a captivating demonstration of traditional Andean weaving — from shearing alpaca or sheep wool, to natural dyeing, loom setup, and intricate weaving patterns that have been passed down through generations.
Once ready, help unearth the Pachamanca and enjoy a delicious spread that includes flavorful meats, quinoa chaufa, seasonal vegetables, and local sauces, followed by a traditional dessert. After the meal, explore locally made handicrafts and textiles before bidding farewell to the community. Your driver will then take you back to Cusco, where your tour concludes with a drop-off at your hotel.
