From Ollantaytambo: Sun Gate & Cachicata Quarries Hike

Hike through the Sacred Valley to the Sun Gate and Cachicata Quarries on a full-day tour from Ollantaytambo. Explore the ancient quarries and enjoy panoramic views of Mount Veronica and the Andes.
Begin your day with a pickup from your hotel in Ollantaytambo and transfer to the Inca Bridge area, the starting point of the hike. Upon arrival, your guide will give you a brief introduction of the route and prepare you for your Andean hiking adventure.

Begin hiking along an ancient Inca trail, gradually ascending through the Andean landscape with beautiful views of the Sacred Valley and the Vilcanota River. The trail includes some steep sections and leads to the impressive Cachicata Quarries, where the Incas extracted enormous granite blocks for the construction of Ollantaytambo.

During the visit, discover massive carved and partially worked stones, unfinished stone blocks left at the quarry, ancient extraction areas and transport routes, and evidence of the extraordinary stoneworking skills of the Incas. Your guide will explain the historical significance of the quarries and the techniques used by Inca stonemasons.

Continue ascending toward Intipunku, one of the most impressive viewpoints in this part of the Sacred Valley. Along the trail, enjoy views of ancient Inca pathways, remnants of ceremonial structures, rugged mountains, and the spectacular Andean landscape.

Upon reaching the Sun Gate, take time to explore the site, admire the panoramic views, and photograph the majestic Mount Veronica and the surrounding valleys. This is the highest point of the hike and a perfect place to rest, appreciate the scenery, and enjoy your box lunch surrounded by the mountains.

After lunch, begin the descent along the mountain trails toward the Cachicata community.
