Arusha: 7-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Machame Route Trek

Day 1: Arusha – Machame Camp
Begin your adventure with a transfer from your hotel in Arusha to Machame Gate. Register and start your trek through the dense forest of fig and rubber trees and other tropical vegetation. As you ascend, the vegetation will change. Walk on the ridge and see the Samira stream on the left and to the right, Weru Weru. Reach Machame Camp and enjoy dinner.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp
Wake up to a fabulous view of Uhuru Peak. Climb up a steep track through the savannah of tall grasses, volcanic rocks, and bearded heather. Pass by giant groundsels as you climb through a ghostly landscape of volcanic lava, caves, and foamy streams.

Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Wake up to views of the entire Shira plateau and sweeping vistas across to Meru and the Shira needles. Climb to a higher altitude at Lava Tower at 15,000 feet and descend down to Barranco Camp, crossing the Bastains stream. Pass by the immense canyon called Grand Barranco and spend the night at Barranco Camp.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Karanga Camp
Spend the day acclimatizing as you conquer the great Barranco wall. While at the top of the wall, enjoy a view of Heim Glacier and be above the clouds. The trail then winds up and down the Karanga valley, making it an ideal climbing day. Spend the night at Karanga Valley.

Day 5: Karanga Camp – Barafu Hut
Follow the trail that intersects with the Mweka Route used to descend on the final two days. Make a stopover at Barafu hut, the last water stop for porters. Enjoy an early dinner to relax and rest before attempting the summit. Briefing from the guide then enjoy a short sleep at Barafu Hut.

Day 6: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Huts
By midnight, start the final part of the climb to attempt the summit before sunrise. Follow the route northwest where you ascend over stone scree. Arrive at Stella Point with an elevation of 5685 meters located on the crater rim to enjoy a magnificent sunrise. Continue ascending on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak. After you are satisfied, descend to Mweka Huts.

Day 7: Mweka Huts – Mweka Gate – Arusha
Descend to Mweka Gate to receive your certificates of achievement. Trek further down to Mweka Village to enjoy a hot lunch. Meet your driver for the final transfer to Arusha.
