描述

Situated at the base of the Rwenzori mountains, Fort Portal, a vibrant and welcoming city is the gateway to your Ugandan adventures. Craters, cradled in steep hillsides form a breathtaking landscape.
Fort Portal, often called the Garden City or Tourism City is one of Uganda's most beautiful cities and popular tourist destinations. Lush rolling hills, rocky crater lakes, and tea plantations surround it. On a cloudless day, the snow-capped summits of the Rwenzori mountains peak out. It was named after British diplomat Sir Gerald Portal, as it was where his base was. The City is Home to Uganda's youngest and one of the four traditional Kingdoms, the Tooro Kingdom.

1. Amabere Caves
The Amabere Caves, also known as the “Amabere Ga NyinaMwiru” which translates to “Breasts of NyinaMwiru” are a historic site believed to be the birthplace of King Bukkuku, the founding King of the Bachwezi dynasty in the 14th Century. The caves are named after an ancient folklore where King Bukkuku had his daughter Nyinamwiru’s breasts cut off to make her less attractive to men. The King’s plan failed and his daughter got pregnant. He then hid her in a cave, or so legend has it. The caves are supported by pillar-like formations of stalactites and stalagmites. These stalactites resemble the breasts of a woman hence the name Amabere ga NyinaMwiru. The story continues...Nyinamwiru eventually gave birth to a son who was named Ndahura. Unable to breastfeed the infant herself, she fed the baby on a fluid that looked like milk dripping from the stalactites. This appeared milky because of the calcium content in the Fluid. Standing alongside Amabere ga Nyinamwiru are the moss-covered rocks behind a beautiful waterfall called Nyakasura. The steaming sound of these waterfalls welcomes you at the entrance of the caves. As you walk through the caves, your guide will enthuse you with the ancient Folklore of the Bachwezi Dynasty.

2. The Crater Lakes
Fort Portal is home to the highest number of crater lakes in Uganda. There are a total of more than three dozen crater lakes found in Tooro. These crater lakes offer a range of activities, including swimming, fishing, nature walks, cycling, and birdwatching. The lakeshores and the surrounding areas are home to over 300 bird species and various primate species. The breathtaking landscape of the crater lakes, cradled in steep hillsides in the southern region of Fort Portal, provides travellers with a picturesque setting for leisurely nature walks. Numerous species of birds, monkeys, butterflies, and vegetation can be found here. A hike of about 15 minutes will take you to three of these outstanding water bodies with beautiful stoning looks worth visiting.

3. Tooro Kingdom
Last but not least is a visit to the Tooro Kingdom palace. Perched on a Karuzika hill, overlooking Fort Portal, the Palace offers 360-degree panoramic views of the city and the green countryside. The Palace is a circular monolith that was constructed in 1963. However, the original structure fell into ruin after Idi Amin abolished Uganda's kingdom system. It was refurbished to its former glory with money sent by General Gaddafi in 2001 after he visited the palace.
