Embark on a 4-day adventure from Kampala to Mgahinga National Park. Track rare mountain gorillas, explore the Virunga Mountains, and relax at Lake Bunyonyi.
Embark on a 4-day adventure to Mgahinga National Park to track the rare and endangered mountain gorillas. Depart from Kampala and drive southwest to Kisoro, stopping for lunch in Mbarara. Enjoy the beautiful scenery as you admire the Kigezi highlands, the sloppy terraces of Kisoro, thousands of plantations on the roadside, views of the Virunga ranges, and various lakes.
Begin your gorilla tracking experience with a briefing from your ranger guide. Then, track the mountain gorillas through the ancient Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, which can take a couple of hours or a whole day depending on the location of the apes. Keep an eye out for forest species such as buffaloes, elephants, black-fronted duikers, and bushbucks.
Stand just meters from man’s distant cousins as they eat, rest, play, and bond with their young. Follow the mountain gorillas as they range freely in the bamboo forest and discover their gorgeous natural habitat and the many species they share it with. After a well-earned trip to the gorillas, drive back to your lodge for an overnight stay. Rest your tired legs with a restorative massage, offered from the gorilla tracking experience.
After breakfast, prepare for your hike to the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes through a bamboo forest that gives you the chance to spot forest birds, swamps, wild vegetation, and the beautiful views of surrounding lakes and agricultural villages. Mgahinga is part of a larger ecosystem that includes two adjacent parks in Rwanda and Congo, sitting high in the clouds, at an altitude of between 2,227m and 4,127m.
Drive to Lake Bunyonyi, a place known as small birds, after the hike for an overnight stay. The journey to Lake Bunyonyi takes 2-3 hours. After breakfast, drive (8-10 hours) back to Kampala with a stopover for lunch en route and the equator if you happened to miss it on your first day of your trip.
At this point, there are two cement circles marking the equator line, and it is worth stopping if you are traveling to Masaka or Kampala for a photo moment. Also, watch a demonstration by a local entrepreneur on how water swirls in opposite directions in the northern and southern hemispheres at the equator line. Another reason that makes the equator a worthwhile stop is the great shopping bargains. The point has several craft shops and art galleries run by individuals and organizations. These craft stalls sell souvenirs and handmade products, some with marks talking about the Equator. It will not be inconveniencing if you bought a T-shirt with the words ‘I crossed the Uganda Equator.’ Continue with your journey, and the driver will drop you at your accommodation either in Kampala or Entebbe as you may wish.
