Begin your experience at the Mengening Temple in Tampaksiring. Hear the sound of eleven spouts running constantly, a steady sound that doesn't stop the whole time you're there. Under it, quieter: sandals on stone, a low murmur of prayer from someone ahead of you in line, occasionally a rooster somewhere outside the temple walls.

See grey stone, worn smooth in places from centuries of hands and feet. Moss in the cracks. A line of people in sarongs, mostly dark blue or black for the water portion, moving slowly from spout to spout. If it's a clear morning, light cutting through the trees above the pool at odd angles depending on the hour.

Feel cold. Not gently cool — properly cold, the kind that makes you gasp the first time water hits your shoulders. Stone underfoot, uneven in spots, slightly slick near the pool's edge.
