Discover Málaga's historic center on a guided walking tour. See the Roman Theatre, the Alcazaba, and the Cathedral, and learn about the city's history from your guide.
We invite you to discover the soul of Málaga on a splendid two-hour walking tour through the monumental heart of a city that combines over three thousand years of history with the vitality of a modern Mediterranean capital. Along the way, you'll see how Phoenician, Roman, Arab, and Christian civilizations intertwine within a single urban space, all while soaking up the charm and light that make Málaga one of the most beloved cities in Andalusia.
We begin in front of Málaga's City Hall, an elegant eclectic-style building next to the Park, whose white stone façade and gardens offer a first taste of the city's early 20th-century civic architecture.
From there, we make our way into the old town to reach one of the city's most remarkable archaeological treasures: the Roman Theatre. Built in the 1st century AD under Emperor Augustus, it remained hidden underground for centuries until its rediscovery in 1951. Today, open to the sky at the foot of the Alcazaba, it offers one of the most photographed sights in town: the perfect layering of Roman and Moorish civilization.
Next, the Alcazaba, the Moorish fortress-palace built in the 11th century, one of the best-preserved alcazabas in Spain. We admire its walls, defensive towers, and fortified gates from the outside, taking in the views over the Roman Theatre and the old town. Once part of the defensive system connecting to Gibralfaro Castle, it's an outstanding example of Hispano-Muslim military and civil architecture, and a chance to talk about life in Islamic Málaga before the Christian conquest of 1487.
We continue to the imposing Málaga Cathedral, affectionately known as "La Manquita" ("the one-armed lady") for its unfinished south tower. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries on the site of the city's former main mosque, this Renaissance cathedral with Baroque touches is one of the jewels of Andalusian religious heritage.
From the Cathedral, we move into Málaga's lively commercial scene along the iconic Calle Larios, one of the most elegant pedestrian streets in Spain, lined with 19th-century façades, shops, and cafés — a fine example of the bourgeois Málaga that flourished with 19th-century industrialization.
We continue on to Plaza de la Merced, one of the most charming squares in the historic center, where Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born in 1881. In front of his birth home, now a foundation, we share details of the artist's Málaga childhood and his lasting bond with the city.
We end at Plaza de la Marina, where the historic center meets the sea, taking in the lively shopping and leisure area of Muelle Uno, right by Málaga's harbor. This modern waterfront promenade, with its shops, terraces, and views of the cruise ships docking in the city, is the perfect finishing touch to a tour that brings together age-old Málaga with the cosmopolitan, sea-facing city it is today.
