Explore Toronto's architecture on a walking tour with a Drag Queen guide. Learn about the city's Modernist buildings, heritage architecture, and the LGBTQ figures who contributed.
Meet your guide, Irma Girdle, a drag queen and architecture expert, at the stunning futuristic Toronto City Hall. Set off on a walking tour and hear the story of "Mod Toronto" and the Modernist architecture of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s.
Learn about the international architects that came here--Mies van der Rohe, I.M. Pei, Edward Durell Stone, Santiago Calatrava--plus some of the local heroes such as Peter Dickinson. We'll make about 12 stops along the way, and sometimes enter a building.
Irma will also discuss heritage architecture from Toronto’s earlier Victorian and Edwardian days. Because Irma is a drag queen, this is not your usual egghead architecture tour. It is full of silliness, sassiness, and fun, and will be unlike anything you have ever experienced before.
When possible, Irma will discuss LGBTQ people who had an influence, including landscape architect Claude Cormier and now 99-year-old Phyllis Lambert.
