Nazaré: Monte de São Bartolomeu Guided Hike

Embark on an easy 3-kilometer circular hike to the summit of Monte de São Bartolomeu, also known as Monte de São Brás. This rocky hill rises to 156 meters above sea level and stands out from the surrounding landscape of the Pinhal de Leiria, creating a unique natural environment where Mediterranean vegetation thrives among the pine forest.

Follow a gentle path through woodland and rocky terrain, gradually leading towards the summit of Monte de São Bartolomeu. At the top, discover the small historic Chapel of São Bartolomeu and São Brás, as well as the forest watchtower.

Enjoy impressive views across the surrounding countryside and towards Nazaré and the Atlantic coast. On clear days, visibility can extend for more than 35 kilometers, making the viewpoint particularly rewarding.

The Monte is also important for its Mediterranean flora. Among the species found in the area are holm oak (Quercus coccifera), strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) and Phillyrea latifolia. The diversity of vegetation also provides habitat for several bird species, making the area interesting for birdwatching and nature observation. Visitors may spot birds such as the kestrel, buzzard, blackbird, crag martin and long-tailed tit.

Beyond its natural beauty, Monte de São Bartolomeu has a strong historical and religious importance for the local community. The hill is closely connected with the traditions surrounding Nazaré and the veneration of São Brás and São Bartolomeu. Every year on 3 February, the site is associated with the traditional celebration and pilgrimage dedicated to São Brás, keeping an important local tradition alive.
