Hike the rim of Sierra Negra’s vast caldera and explore the colourful lava fields, cones, and fumaroles of Volcán Chico.
Explore the volcanic landscapes of Isabela Island on a guided hike to Sierra Negra and Volcán Chico. Travel from Puerto Villamil to the highlands, then walk through highland vegetation to a viewpoint on the rim of Sierra Negra’s immense caldera, measuring around 10 kilometres across.
Follow the crater edge as black, solidified lava stretches across the landscape. Continue over lava fields towards Volcán Chico, where active fumaroles, volcanic cones, and ochre, red, and black lava reveal the impact of recent eruptions, including the 2018 eruption.
Enjoy a packed lunch along the route before returning on foot to the trailhead. On clear days, look out over northern Isabela and Fernandina Island, with views towards the Alcedo, Darwin, and Wolf volcanoes. Keep an eye out for Darwin’s finches, yellow warblers, Galápagos hawks, and endemic vegetation along the trail.
