Pickup is at 06:30 from your Tokyo hotel or address for the drive to Tsukioka. The onsen day-use bath comes first, a soak in the green mineral water before the town gets busy. In the afternoon the van continues to Shibata, where the castle grounds and Shimizuen, a preserved Edo-period samurai garden, are included in the price. Tsukioka's water gets its colour from dissolved sulphur compounds that turn a soft jade-green in the bath, distinct from the clear or milky-white onsen found elsewhere in the region, and the town has built its whole identity around that water since it was discovered in the early twentieth century. Shimizuen's garden at Shibata was laid out for a wealthy merchant family and keeps its original pond, stone bridges and clipped pine trees largely as they were first planted.
