Day 1: From the Highlands to Kuang Si Falls

Leave the usual day-trip route behind on a two-day journey through upland villages, forests, rice fields, and waterways.

After hotel pickup, drive to Ban Long Lao, a Hmong and Khmu village southeast of Luang Prabang. Trek through rice fields, orchards, and farmland before climbing into forested hills. The approximately 9km trail takes 3–4 hours of walking, with uphill and downhill sections and countryside views.

Stop for lunch at a small, open-air restaurant run by a local Khmu family beside a forest spring. Enjoy freshly prepared Lao food in a peaceful setting away from the main visitor routes. Your meal directly supports your hosts.

Walk another 30 minutes to Kuang Si Falls, then spend the afternoon at your own pace. Explore forest trails and limestone cascades, swim in designated turquoise pools, and visit the bear rescue center.

Stay overnight in Ban Thapene, the village at the falls' entrance, with a choice of resort hotel (Lao Asia Luang Prabang Resort), guesthouse (Vanvisa at the Falls), or homestay. The accommodations overlook the downstream waters, with opportunities to swim and relax beside the stream. With no return journey that afternoon, you can enjoy an unhurried stay.

Day 2: Rice Farming, Waterways, and the Mekong

At Kuang Si Heritage Rice Farm, learn traditional Lao rice cultivation with local farmers. Discover seed selection using salt water, try plowing with a water buffalo, and join activities such as sowing, transplanting, or harvesting. Demonstrations and hands-on activities introduce threshing, winnowing, and rice preparation. Activities vary with growing conditions and farm work.

Share a freshly prepared Lao lunch in a traditional wooden house. Enjoy sticky rice and local dishes while hearing about farming seasons, village life, and shared water resources.

After lunch, take a scenic tractor ride through terraced paddies beside irrigation canals. Look out for water buffalo and farmers tending their crops.

Continue on foot along the canals towards Kuang Si Falls. Learn about the traditional Muang Fai irrigation system and how communities cooperate to share water and maintain the channels connecting forest and farmland.

Reach the upper falls and descend to the main cascades. Enjoy around two hours to explore, swim in designated pools, or relax, now with a deeper understanding of how this water sustains nearby villages and fields.

Finish with a sunset cruise on the Mekong River, watching the changing light and riverside life as you return to Luang Prabang at around 6:30 PM.
