Your adventure begins with pickup from your accommodation in Luang Prabang. Travel by traditional tuk-tuk to the Mekong River, then enjoy a scenic local ferry crossing to Chom Phet District. As you leave the town behind, continue through peaceful countryside landscapes on a fun tractor-wagon ride, passing rice fields, traditional villages, gardens, and beautiful mountain scenery.

When you arrive, meet your friendly local Khmu guide and enjoy a refreshing welcome drink before beginning your cultural experience. Learn a few simple Khmu greetings and discover the important role rice plays in Lao culture, traditions, celebrations, and everyday life.

Hands-On Rice Farming Experience

Step into the rice fields and discover the traditional process behind one of Laos’ most important foods. Your local guide will introduce you to the different stages of rice production and explain the knowledge, skills, and hard work that local farmers have passed down through generations.

Depending on the farming season, you may have the opportunity to take part in a variety of traditional activities, including:

Preparing and planting rice seeds.
Learning how rice seedlings are carefully grown.
Experiencing traditional water-buffalo ploughing in the rice paddies.
Planting and transplanting young rice seedlings by hand.
Harvesting rice using traditional farming tools.
Learning how rice is dried, threshed, and processed.
Trying traditional rice pounding and husk-separation techniques.
Discovering how Laos’ famous sticky rice is prepared and steamed.

The activities may vary according to the season, but each visit offers an authentic insight into rural life and the traditional journey of rice from the field to the table.

Lao Cooking Experience

After your time in the rice fields, continue to a local cooking area where you’ll discover the flavors of traditional Lao cuisine. Using fresh, seasonal ingredients, your local host will guide you through the preparation of authentic Lao dishes.

Get involved in every step—from preparing fresh herbs and vegetables to mixing ingredients, cooking, and learning traditional techniques and flavors. Along the way, discover how locally grown ingredients, including rice, are transformed into delicious everyday meals.

Once the cooking is complete, sit down and enjoy the dishes you have prepared in a relaxed local setting. Share the meal with your hosts, taste authentic Lao flavors, and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the countryside.

A Journey from Rice Field to Table

This half-day experience is more than a rice-farming activity or cooking class. It is an opportunity to travel beyond Luang Prabang, meet local people, experience Khmu culture, get your hands dirty in the rice fields, and discover the connection between farming, food, and everyday life in Laos.

At the end of the experience, travel back through the countryside and cross the Mekong by local ferry before returning to your accommodation in Luang Prabang.
