Discover the heritage of Lao rice cultivation at a working rice farm near Luang Prabang. Enjoy a traditional Lao lunch and choose to visit Kuang Si Falls to explore the waterfall park.
Begin your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel in Luang Prabang. Travel by minivan through the countryside to Kuang Si Heritage Rice Farm, a living landscape celebrating the heritage of Lao rice cultivation.
Meet your local hosts and explore the terraced paddies. Learn why rice, especially sticky rice, is central to Lao meals, livelihoods, and cultural traditions. Your hosts will introduce the farming cycle and explain how shared irrigation and cooperation help sustain village agriculture.
Begin with a traditional saltwater method for selecting healthy rice grains for sowing. Discover how farmers prepare the soil and see how water buffalo help plow the paddies.
Then step into the mud and try transplanting rice seedlings alongside local farmers. With their guidance, learn how to space and plant the young shoots, experiencing the skill and care involved in raising a crop.
Try cutting mature rice with traditional hand tools and learn how the harvested crop is dried and threshed to separate the grains from the stalks. Use a traditional mortar and pestle to pound the harvested rice and loosen its husks, then try winnowing by hand to separate the grain from the chaff. Follow each step that turns a harvest from the field into rice ready for the kitchen.
Relax over a Lao lunch served in the farm’s traditional stilt house. Enjoy sticky rice you have helped prepare alongside local dishes, and hear your hosts’ stories of water sharing, seasonal work, and life around the rice fields. The meal offers a warm introduction to Lao hospitality while supporting the local people who share their skills and traditions.
After lunch, watch sugarcane being crushed using a traditional wooden press. Enjoy a glass of freshly extracted juice as a refreshing finish to your visit.
After lunch and freshly pressed sugarcane juice, return by minivan to your hotel in Luang Prabang, arriving at approximately 2:30 PM.
Optionally, extend your day with an afternoon visit to nearby Kuang Si Falls. Spend approximately two hours exploring the waterfall park, admiring its cascading turquoise pools, strolling along shaded paths, and swimming in the designated areas. Afterward, travel back by minivan or boat, arriving at your hotel in Luang Prabang at approximately 5:30 PM by minivan or 6:30 PM by boat.
