This full-day experience combines guided visits, Andean landscapes, a buffet lunch, and a special hands-on Torito de Pucará painting experience with local artisans. Instead of simply taking a direct bus, make the journey part of your Peru adventure.
Early morning — Hotel pickup in Puno
Begin with pickup from your hotel in Puno and transfer to the departure point. Travel toward Cusco while learning about the history, traditions, archaeology, and landscapes of the southern Andes.
8:50 a.m. — Pukará & Torito de Pucará Workshop
Visit Pukará, an ancient Andean settlement famous for its pre-Inca heritage, ceramics, and the iconic Torito de Pucará.
Learn about the history and symbolism of this traditional ceramic figure and its importance in Andean traditions. Then, guided by local artisans, participate in a hands-on painting activity and create your own Torito de Pucará.
At the end, take your painted ceramic figure with you as a personal souvenir. This activity offers a more personal connection with local traditions while supporting artisans in the Pukará area.
11:00 a.m. — La Raya
Continue to Abra La Raya, approximately 4,335 meters (14,222 feet) above sea level. This is the highest point of the route and the natural divide between Puno and Cusco.
Admire the surrounding mountains and high-altitude Andean landscapes and take photographs before continuing the journey.
11:35 a.m. — Buffet Lunch
Enjoy a buffet lunch at a local tourist restaurant, with a selection of traditional Peruvian and Andean dishes, including options such as meat, chicken, fish, salads, side dishes, desserts, and herbal infusions.
1:00 p.m. — Raqchi Archaeological Site
Visit Raqchi, an important archaeological complex associated with the Inca period. Discover the impressive Temple of Wiracocha, known for its enormous walls and distinctive combination of stone and adobe construction.
Your guide will explain the history and cultural significance of the site as you explore the archaeological remains and surrounding landscape.
3:30 p.m. — Andahuaylillas
Visit the town of Andahuaylillas and the Church of San Pedro Apóstol, widely known as the “Sistine Chapel of America.”
Explore its impressive colonial interior, decorated with religious paintings and artistic details, while learning about its history and importance to the cultural heritage of the region.
Approximately 5:30 p.m. — Arrival in Cusco
Continue by tourist bus toward Cusco. Arrival is approximately 5:30 p.m. although the schedule may vary depending on road conditions, traffic, weather, and time spent at each stop.
You will be dropped off at the designated arrival point in Cusco, concluding your Ruta del Sol experience.
This experience is ideal for travelers who want to travel between Puno and Cusco while discovering archaeological sites, Andean landscapes, local traditions, and gastronomy and creating their own Torito de Pucará to take home as a memorable souvenir.
