Tbilisi: Kazbegi Day Trip with Gergeti Trinity Church

Discover the beauty of the Georgian Military Highway on a day trip from Tbilisi. Visit Shiomghvime Monastery, Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, and the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church.
Begin your journey with a visit to the Shiomghvime Monastery, a peaceful 6th-century monastic complex hidden in a dramatic limestone canyon near Mtskheta. Founded by one of the Assyrian Fathers, Saint Shio, the monastery blends perfectly into the rocky cliffs. The quiet surroundings, ancient stone walls, and cave cells carved into the rock create a spiritual and mystical atmosphere.

Next, stop at the Zhinvali Dam, a spectacular turquoise reservoir surrounded by green hills and mountain scenery. Built in the 1980s, the dam supplies drinking water to Tbilisi. Continue to the Ananuri Fortress, a 16th–17th century fortress complex overlooking the Zhinvali Reservoir. Continue to Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi, a charming mountain town surrounded by towering peaks. The village sits at the foot of Mount Kazbek and serves as the gateway to highland adventures. Traditional houses, fresh mountain air, and peaceful scenery make it one of the most beautiful destinations in Georgia.

Finally, visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, the crown jewel of the tour. Built in the 14th century at 2,170 meters above sea level, this iconic church stands alone on a hilltop with Mount Kazbek rising behind it. The combination of medieval architecture and dramatic mountain scenery creates one of the most iconic views in the Caucasus.
