Tbilisi: Kazbegi Day Trip with Gergeti Trinity Church

Discover the beauty of the Georgian Military Highway on a day trip from Tbilisi. Visit Shiomghvime Monastery, Zhinvali Reservoir, Ananuri Fortress, and the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church.
Begin your journey with a visit to the Shiomghvime Monastery, a peaceful 6th-century monastic complex hidden in a dramatic limestone canyon near Mtskheta. Founded by one of the Assyrian Fathers, Saint Shio, the monastery blends perfectly into the rocky cliffs. The quiet surroundings, ancient stone walls, and cave cells carved into the rock create a spiritual and mystical atmosphere.

Next, stop at the Zhinvali Dam, a spectacular turquoise reservoir surrounded by green hills and mountain scenery. Built in the 1980s, the dam supplies drinking water to Tbilisi. The vibrant blue water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding landscapes, making it one of the most photogenic stops on the route.

Continue to the Ananuri Fortress, a 16th–17th century fortress complex overlooking the Zhinvali Reservoir. Once the residence of the Aragvi Dukes, the complex includes defensive towers, churches, and stunning stone carvings. From the top of the towers, enjoy panoramic views over the lake and mountains.

Near Pasanauri village, see the Black and White Aragvi rivers meet but do not immediately mix due to differences in mineral content and flow. This natural phenomenon creates a visible contrast between darker and lighter waters flowing side by side — a fascinating sight and a popular photo stop.

Next, head to the Gudauri View Point, also known as the Russia–Georgia Friendship Monument, which offers one of the most dramatic panoramic views in the Caucasus. Built in 1983, this colorful circular monument overlooks the deep Devil’s Valley gorge. The view stretches across endless mountain ridges, especially beautiful in winter when covered in snow.

Continue to Stepantsminda, commonly known as Kazbegi, a charming mountain town surrounded by towering peaks. The village sits at the foot of Mount Kazbek and serves as the gateway to highland adventures. Traditional houses, fresh mountain air, and peaceful scenery make it one of the most beautiful destinations in Georgia.

Finally, visit the Gergeti Trinity Church, the crown jewel of the tour. Built in the 14th century at 2,170 meters above sea level, this iconic church stands alone on a hilltop with Mount Kazbek rising behind it. The combination of medieval architecture and dramatic mountain scenery creates one of the most iconic views in the Caucasus.
