Descripción

Discover the magical world of the New Zealand glowworm on Auckland's North Shore guided glowworm tour. Learn about the life cycle of the glowworms in the surrounding nature in Auckland's North Shore.
Step into a world of natural wonder on this enchanting evening tour through Awaruku Reserve. Upon arrival, your guide will welcome you with a brief introduction to the night’s adventure and a short safety briefing to prepare you for the journey ahead.

Nestled within over 12 hectares of lush native forest, Awaruku Reserve is home to some of New Zealand’s most iconic trees. As you make your way along the tranquil trails, your guide will highlight the towering Kauri trees and graceful Nikau Palms, sharing insights into the rich ecological and cultural history of the area—including its significance as a site of ancient Māori settlements.

As dusk falls and the forest begins to quiet, you’ll arrive at a secluded spot known for its glowworm displays. Here, you’ll witness the mesmerizing bioluminescence of Arachnocampa luminosa, tiny larvae that illuminate the darkness with a soft blue-green glow. Learn about their unique lifecycle and how they use silk threads and light to catch their prey—an unforgettable natural spectacle that feels nothing short of magical.

After admiring the glowworms, your guide will lead you on a short walk focused on the conservation efforts that protect this special ecosystem. Discover how Awaruku Reserve supports native species such as the New Zealand Kākā and Kererū, and learn about the vital ecological restoration work being done to ensure their survival.

Our Glow-worm Tour and Wild Kiwi & Stargazing Tour also offer opportunities to witness natural bioluminescence when conditions are right. On some evenings, we visit coastal areas where bioluminescent organisms illuminate the water and shoreline, creating a rare natural light display.

Bioluminescence is the natural process by which living organisms produce light. In our experiences, this can include glow-worms, which emit light in forest environments, and bioluminescent dinoflagellates, the microscopic marine organisms responsible for glowing water — the same phenomenon featured on our dedicated Bioluminescence Kayak (Bio Tour).

While bioluminescence sightings are always natural and conditions-dependent, these moments offer a deeper understanding of New Zealand’s living nightscape and the science behind living light.

The tour concludes with a peaceful walk back to the car park, offering time to reflect on the beauty and significance of this hidden gem. Awaruku Reserve is more than a forest—it’s a living sanctuary, where ancient trees, glowing insects, and native birds thrive thanks to ongoing preservation efforts.

Join us for an evening of discovery, connection, and quiet awe in the heart of New Zealand’s native bush.
